Income Bonds

Home » CMA Glossary Term » Corporate Finance » Income Bonds

Income bonds are a hybrid debt security where interest payments are contingent upon the issuer generating sufficient earnings, unlike traditional bonds where interest payments are mandatory. Unpaid interest typically does not accumulate (non-cumulative), and failure to pay interest does not result in default. These bonds are often issued by companies in financial distress as an alternative to traditional debt instruments, offering flexibility in cash flow management while maintaining ownership structure.
