The retention ratio, also known as the plowback ratio, is a financial metric that measures the proportion of net earnings retained in a company rather than distributed as dividends to shareholders. It is calculated by subtracting the dividend payout ratio from one. A higher retention ratio indicates a company’s focus on reinvesting profits for growth. This term is crucial for assessing a company’s long-term financial strategy and sustainability.
