Unrealized Gains and Losses refer to the increase or decrease in the value of an asset that has not yet been sold or settled. These gains or losses are “unrealized” because they exist only on paper and have not been converted into actual cash transactions. Unrealized gains and losses are typically reported in the financial statements under other comprehensive income, affecting the equity section.
