The purchase method, now largely replaced by the acquisition method, was an accounting approach used in business combinations. It involved recording the assets and liabilities of the acquired company at their fair market value on the acquisition date. This method emphasized the cost of acquisition and required the recognition of goodwill. The purchase method was instrumental in determining the financial impact of mergers and acquisitions on financial statements.
