The cost method is an accounting approach used to record investments in which the investor holds a minority interest, typically less than 20%, in another entity. Under the cost method, the investment is recorded at its original purchase cost, and income is recognized only when dividends are received. This method does not adjust for changes in the investee’s net assets.
