Overapplied Overhead

Home » CMA Glossary Term » Cost Accounting » Overapplied Overhead

Overapplied overhead refers to a situation in cost accounting where the overhead costs allocated to products or services exceed the actual overhead incurred. This occurs when the estimated overhead rate applied during production is higher than the actual overhead costs. Overapplied overhead results in a credit balance in the overhead account, indicating that the company has overestimated its overhead expenses.
