A troubled debt restructuring occurs when a creditor, for economic or legal reasons related to the debtor’s financial difficulties, grants a concession to the debtor that it would not otherwise consider. This may involve modifying the terms of the debt or accepting assets or equity in satisfaction of the debt. Such restructurings are typically undertaken to avoid default and are accounted for under specific financial reporting guidelines.
