Yes, internal auditing is on the IMA’s list of qualifying experience for the CMA work requirement. Internal audit involves evaluating internal controls, financial reporting accuracy, risk management, and operational effectiveness, all of which align with management accounting principles. Work as an internal auditor at the staff, senior, or manager level generally counts toward the two-year requirement. External (public accounting) audit work can also count if it involves financial analysis and management accounting decisions, but pure compliance or tax-prep work typically doesn’t. When you submit your Experience Verification Form, your supervisor will describe your responsibilities, and the IMA reviews the substance, not just your job title.
