You need two continuous years of professional experience in management accounting or financial management. Qualifying work includes financial analysis, planning, budgeting, forecasting, cost analysis, internal auditing, investment decisions, risk management, performance management, and financial reporting (preparing or analyzing). Public accounting work can also count if it’s at a level where you’re using management accounting principles. Part-time work counts at 50% credit — so 20 hours per week for two years equals one year of full-time. Once you’ve completed the two years, you submit the Experience Verification Form, signed by your supervisor or HR, to the IMA. You have up to seven years after passing the exam to fulfill this requirement.
