Better depends on what you’re optimizing for. An MBA is a broader, more general management degree — it covers strategy, marketing, operations, leadership, and finance, plus you get the network and the brand of a business school. It also costs much more and takes longer. The CMA is a focused, technical credential: it gives you deep, applied knowledge of management accounting and corporate finance specifically, at a fraction of the cost and time. For someone aiming at corporate finance, FP&A, controllership, or CFO roles, the CMA is often the more efficient choice because it signals the exact skills the job requires. Plenty of professionals do both: get the CMA early in their career, then add an MBA later if the role demands it.
